Like him or loathe him, no one could possibly deny that Scarface has serious swagger. With his good looks, striking intelligence and considerable talent, it’s up for debate whether or not he’s mind-blowingly confident with good reason or just flat out arrogant; he’s quick to sing his own praises and sneer at his opponent’s failings in his own inimitable fashion, throwing his weight around both figuratively and literally. It doesn’t (or does?) help that he’s a natural showman and thoroughly enjoys being the centre of attention, using his flair for the dramatic to make big entrances and leave bigger impressions on those around him- he gladly plays up his less-than-stellar history as a heel so that he can occupy the role of ‘bad boy’.
And Scarface most definitely lives up to that title. Anyone planning on upstaging his efforts can expect one hell of a grudge, and perhaps even to invoke the wrath of his filthy temper; he’s a berserker for a reason and he doesn’t suffer fools, or insults to his pride, gladly. In the ring, meanwhile, his bad attitude only intensifies. Scarface shows flagrant and delighted disregard for authority, the rules and his opponent in general, often fighting dirty, being excessively brutal or even outright cheating to get ahead. Part of his well-known strategy is to get under his opponent’s skin: he’s often been called a master of psychological warfare, but by and large his talents are less sophisticated than that, lying in picking up on his opponent’s sore spots and battering them with abuse and lies and emotional blackmail until they crumble. In keeping with his sense for the theatrical, these lies are often larger than life, designed to shock rather than make any obvious logical sense; they’d fall apart instantly if someone pulled at their seams, but he relies more on their initial emotional impact than anything else to enrage his opponent while he keeps a cool head. And all of this is turned up to eleven when he enters his Mask of Madness mode, removing any inhibitions he might have had, verbally and physically.
But the strange fact is that, Scarface doesn’t seem to have trouble making friends; for all his faults, he has a natural charisma and sense of humour, cruel though it can sometimes be, that means they often manifest as a roguish charm instead- there’s something incredibly likeable about his devil-may-care attitude. People are often willing to accept his less than pleasant side as just what he does and not an accurate representation of his personality and opinions. He can, after all, work well in a team and get on well with other people when it suits him, and has often been shown to have a heroic streak in him- he can even shut up about himself, keep his head down and focus in a pinch. So while he’s no angel and can be something of a loose cannon, he can’t be working against them, can he?
What most people don’t realise, though, is that he most certainly can and most certainly is: the truth is that a lot of the time Scarface is actually engaged in a complicated double bluff, and that in actuality he’s a ruthless, selfish bastard only out for number one, who only trusts people as far as he can throw or manipulate them. Make no mistake- if there’s one thing that Scarface isn’t lying about is his intelligence. He’s highly analytically minded, allowing him to put together careful strategies and take his opponent’s techniques to pieces in advance. The serious psychological tactics he uses involve convincing people otherwise and knowing just how long to wait for the best possible moment to strike; considering his temper, he’s very patient and is willing to stay “undercover” for a long time if it means insinuating himself into a useful position. This does occasionally backfire, and every now and he'll find himself actually buying into the act himself and starting to sympathise with the people around him and their ideals- but his opportunism almost always wins out in the end.
Similarly, what passes for arrogance with most people is actually narcissism and sometimes a ferocious hunger for power. He genuinely believes that he’s the best and should therefore be entitled to a place at the top, particularly after the rough start he was handed in life. The lies and put-downs he comes out with during his matches aren’t just a way to get under his opponent’s skin- he wholly believes that they’re generally weak and pathetic, and even when he knows he’s lying he can’t help but get a spiteful pleasure out of the pain he causes them. He's particularly scathing about humans, presumably due to the fact that his formative years left him exposed to their racism against more vulnerable choujin. Breaking someone psychologically is just another way for him to exert his superiority, and to get back at a world that's so often wronged him.
That said, his selfishness has an unexpected side-effect: when he meets someone he genuinely likes, Scarface go out of his way to keep them in his life for himself. Though he might tell himself that he doesn’t need anyone else, there are still a couple of people he cares about- most notably Kevin Mask and (bizarrely, considering their history) his current tag partner, Jade. His relationship with Kevin is a little confused due to the way Scarface flip-flops on whether he’s a face or a heel. During the Demon Seed arc he’s show to care deeply about his wellbeing and they make a very close tag team, looking out for and supporting each other- they grew close during an incredibly difficult part of their lives and so have a very intimate bond. At the same time, though, ultimately he’s willing to sell him out for his own glory by the Ultimate Tag arc. With Jade it’s just as difficult to pin down but also a lot more intense. He’s even shown to be willing to let Jade in on his machinations so long as he shuts up and does as he’s told, even when it would make more sense to keep them to himself- it’s something of an ironic failure on Scarface’s part that he refuses to recognise that the highly moral Jade would almost certainly be horrified by the prospect of betraying the rest of their team. In a way, he’d rather be wilfully ignorant of this and expect Jade to agree with him just because he should than admit that he’d want him to join him because he likes Jade and wants him around.
Perhaps even more surprisingly, his need for attention and for competition comes through all the more strongly when it comes to their relationship: when it seems as though Jade isn’t paying him enough attention, or that he’s more interested in other people than he is in him, Scarface can get downright possessive, even to the point of seeming insecure about their relationship (even if he would never admit to their being friends so plainly). In particular, he gets surprisingly jealous of Jade’s “Lehrer” and guardian, Brocken Jr. and the close bond they share. When “upstaged” by someone in this way, he’ll often lash out at Jade and berate him for it before just plain sulking. At the same time, the more he denigrates and bullies Jade, the more Scarface hopes to distance himself from how unnervingly close they are and how vulnerable his attachment makes him feel.
But unhealthy though their current relationship is, it and his earlier relationship with Kevin do demonstrate one thing: Scarface is more than capable of caring about other people, even if they have to work hard to pierce his selfishness. Part of the reason that Jade leaves an impression on him is that he’s stupendously persistent in being his friend, resulting in a surprisingly functional and effective partnership- as much as Scarface would deny it, he cares more about Jade than just about anyone. Not only that, but as a result of this persistence, in the future Scarface finally admits defeat and willingly sacrifices his face (and almost his life) to protect Jade. He more than has the ability to be a good person- it simply remains to be seen whether or not he develops along those lines in-game.
